ADD'L INFO: This one year Spine Fellowship, August 2012 – July 2013, available to candidates Board-eligible in orthopedic surgery, provides training to gain sufficient experience and expertise for the chosen candidate to pursue an academic career in spine surgery.  This fellowship provides a full spectrum of experience in surgical care for spinal disease including Level I trauma, degenerative, deformity, tumor, infection and inflammatory disorders of the spine with faculty in spine surgery at our institution performing over 1,000 cases each year. Training in up to date surgical techniques including minimally invasive surgery and diagnostic and therapeutic injection are offered.  Our tertiary care referral center provides care to a population of over one million persons centered in the second largest metro area of New England Within A high quality academic experience is provided, with dedicated research residents and staff, patient database, literature resources, and collabora  tive affiliation with translational researchers within our medical school basic sciences departments and orthopedic faculty.

This fellowship is designed to train orthopaedic surgeons for an academic or private practice career in orthopaedic spine surgery.  The fellow will be exposed to both adult and pediatric pathology.  All areas of spine surgery are available to the fellow including fractures, tumors, degenerative spine disease, scoliosis, spondylothesis, infections, and disc disease.  The fellow will learn both traditional anterior and posterior deformity surgical procedures as well as new technology including minimal access surgery, disc arthroplasty and lateral approach surgery.  In addition, the fellow will be allocated time for research with their faculty mentors.

The UCSF Spine Surgery Fellowship is designed to provide fellows with a comprehensive and rigorous training in the evaluation and operative management of a wide variety of spinal disorders.  Our mission is to train surgeons to be compassionate and capable care providers, with the knowledge and skills to care for patients presenting along a broad spectrum of complexity.  Unique aspects of this fellowship include significant exposure to deformity, degenerative and complex reconstruction spine surgery cases and a strong educational program with teaching and research conferences 3 days per week. In addition to traditional instrumentation procedures, the fellowship also offers exposure to new technologies including minimally invasive approaches and investigational studies involving new devices and clinical trials.  The faculty of the UCSF Spine Service performs over 1000 operative procedures per year, encompassing a balance of simple and complex spinal pathologies.

The University of Maryland Medical System provides a variety of clinical settings and prepares the fellow to practice in most any environment. University Center includes University Hospital, the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, and the Baltimore VA Medical Center, all contiguously located on the same campus. Collectively, these hospitals provide exposure to a variety of spinal disorders in a quaternary facility and complex polytrauma. Outpatient spinal procedures including minimally invasive procedures are performed at Kernan Hospital. The trauma center will allow the Spine fellow to be exposed to the preoperative management of patients with traumatic spinal cord injuries.
